sweet pea seed/flower colouration

Amanda7Amanda7 Posts: 5

In previous years I've sown white sweet pea, their seed have all been pale cream colour. This year the seed I bought (Sept last year) are a mid brown colour with a faint hint of pink. Have the seeds been mislabeled? Will rather ruin my colour scheme if these end up being pink.

Hi Amanda - I can't say I've ever noticed specific colours in s.pea seeds - they usually just look light brown to me, although you will always get some variation within that.

It might be that the seeds are wrongly labelled, as these things can be tricky. If you sow them, carefully label them, and then if they turn out completely different from what you thought you'd bought, you can always take a photo and contact the supplier. image

The ones I sowed this year were definitely a darkish purplish brownish sort of colour  - the flowers are creamy with purple shading (or at least the pic on the packet is).

I've just sown a load of darks and whites. Didn't notice any real difference in the seeds image

Maybe I need a visit to specsavers Dove  image  image

  • Hi, I've sown my sweet pea seeds and they were all dark purplish brown.  They are a mixture of colours, although the seeds were in separate colour pack, but they all looked the same.  Anxiously awaiting them to flower later on, they are however all sprouting after just 12 days in a cool greenhouse.

This I think is only my 5th year of growing sweet pea, other colours have just been brown of varying shades but the red flowering have had a definite reddish hue to the seed. I emailed the supplier, thinking they'd know all about them, didn't answer my question but are sending another packet of the white flower seed. Had a couple of pale seed remaining from last year, so planted those in the hope I will have a couple of what I'm after but they haven't germinated yet……….has only been a week so I shall continue to hold my breath.

Keep a note of them all anyway Amanda, in case you have got something other than what you wanted.

I mainly grow dark reddish purples and whites/creams, and usually Cupani, which are purply.  I can honestly say, in all the years I've grown sweet peas, I've never really noticed the seed colours being terribly different. They're not uniform in colour of course, but they just look 'brownish' to me image image

  • Hello Amanda,  If you save seeds from your previous crop I think the colouration of the seeds may depend on how they are dried.  Like Fairygirl I haven't really taken that much notice of the seeds colour, but the quality of them.  I did have some that looked pretty miserable, but I soaked them for 36 hours and they plumped up nicely.  They have since just germinated, I look forward to seeing the result and quality of the flowers.  I only grow them for my own enjoyment and picking regularly for the house to enjoy the perfume and colours.  Hope you have some good success.
