First try for potatoes for us this year, we've never had the space to do them before. We've got a brand new bed that was previously a field and seems to be pretty good soil. Does anybody have any advice for a first timer? Have bought some pre-chatted first earlies (Rocket I believe) and some maincrops on Wednesday, can the first earlies go in now?

     Hi Woodsi

I have put my Rockets in today, it does depend where you are, usually its safe to plant 4 weeks before the last expected frost in your area. This means by the time the plant is above ground, usually about 4 weeks later, the risk of frost has passed.

http://www.gardenfocused.co.uk/ is a great site for planting schedules and will also adjust timings for your area and give the last frost date estimate.

    HTH :)

So my Charlotte'a have gone in, if there is any late frost I might just protect them for that one night.

I am going to get some main crop potatoes soon, does anyone have any favourite varieties?
