Pruning a new Malus Coccinella
in Fruit & veg
Hello, I have just planted a new Malus Coccinella tree. It had shoots every inch or so and I have removed these on the bottom half so the tree develops a proper trunk. These shoots continue to the top of the tree (every inch and about 3 inches in length) Should I leave them or how should I prune them. I want the tree to grow upwards but to also thicken up.
Many thanks
Liz

Hi Liz
I would just leave them be - they'll grow and produce side shoots over the years. Crab apples rarely need much if any pruning.
