OP - I wouldn't waste time with aerators, dressing, feed, weedkiller, scarifiers etc. That lawn needs reseeded. How it's done depends on how good a job you want done and how much you want to spend.
The basic version would be to spray the whole thing with glyphosate then 3-4 weeks later cut the dead turf all off, put down a dressing of good loamy soil, rake, tamp down by foot, rake a light tilth then seed.
IN reality there may be poor soil causing the moss, which the above doesn't address, so you may need to look at getting drainage put in, importing a larger quantity of good loamy soil blended with compost and grit/sand and rotovating it all in before a light compaction, levelling and turf or seed.
I genuinely wouldn't go with a lawn franchise... they are what McDonalds is to dining. Cheap, generic and short term. They are a bit of a joke amongst many professional lawnskeepers due to their awful timing of treatments, massive nitrogen content of a lot of their feeds and a myriad of other questionable practices. Don't forget - they are business people who have bought into a franchise... NOT experts on lawns!
I think Pauline got a bit over-zealous with seeing your reference to lanwsmith as an advert when you were actually providing a reference source of good and well respected information.
Rob. ....Dave is right, I did think it was an advert . Please accept my apologies .
Please could anyone help, we moved into a new house last year & there is some brown weed type thing growing all over our grass, anyone had anything similar, what is it & how best to get rid?
