Last Frost

RP32RP32 Posts: 47

How do you know when the last frost is anticipated, are there any good websites that provide info?

Just when I thought the temperatures were picking up, everything is frozen outside this morning (South Wales).

I am waiting to unwrap my banana plant and don't want to expose it to any frost.

Thanks

RP

It snowed in June in 1975. Your guess is probably as good as anyone'simage

Here in Surrey it is sometimes April, but has also been late May. So I never risk things til after the last May bank holiday - which coincides with the schools half term holiday.

This site gives you last predicted frost date if you put your postcode in

There is a website called Garden Focussed where you can put in your nearest town and it will predict your last frost date.

It says we in Norwich will get our last frost in late April ..... image

Do you think they're basing their dates on temperatures in towns and cities, which are always warmer ... even here on the edge of the city we're chillier than in the city centre, whereas out in the countryside temps are considerably lower.

You get to know your own area. We can have frosts at any time through March and April (we had snow on Tuesday followed by a frost yesterday) but it's cold wet ground that prevents planting out here, more than frosts.

End of May/beginning of June  is the usual rule, but it depends on your height above sea level, and the nature of your own plot as much as anything. A rural, windy, open site will never be as warm as a sheltered town garden, no matter what part of the country you're in.

It also depends what plants you grow. Some are tougher than the books, and experts, state. I wouldn't be putting a banana out any time soon though!  image

If I could accurately predict the last frost,I'd be down the bookies.
