Pampas grass

I have a mature pampas grass which I need to move to make way for my new greenhouse which i have wanted for years. How much sun does pampas grass need, will it do badly in shade. Will mature pampas grass survive the move okay.

It will be very difficult to move a mature pampas grass, Rosemary.  As well as the razor sharp leaves to contend with, they have very tough roots which will be difficult to dig out.  If you want to keep it, I would suggest taking some rooted divisions from the edge and planting those in the new spot instead of trying to move the beast wholesale.  They do need a fair bit of sun to produce the flower spikes.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Hi Rosemary, don't wish to contradict what Bob said, but we had a large mature one that we didn't want that we gave to my sister-in-law.  It was difficult to dig up but we managed it and it did really well in her garden, still thriving as far as we know!

  • Thank you both for advice. Will take some rooted divisions if move in case of problems. May also look to see if can position greehouse so won't have to move the pampas gras. All other plants in the way of the greenhouse were much simpler but will find some way to sort out the pampas grass as have been looking forward to having a greenhouse for many years.
