Eucalyptus gunni in shade?

MayLaneMayLane Posts: 203

Does growing this in shade restrict it's growth?

We had one in our old garden,  turned our back and it grew massively quick. The place I have in mind in shady and would be restricted by cutting it back over 12 feet. It is by a retaining wall though. Would that be a bad idea?

Our neighbour's that back onto our house have planted one at the top of our retaining wall. Is that a bad idea?

GIven the size these things get to and the likely root spread I think it's a very bad idea to have one planted at the top of a wall of any sort.   They can grow to 12m high very quickly and spread to 8m wide.   Roots spread to match the canopy width so not a tree for small gardens unless you plan to coppice it every year to restrict growth and concentrate on lovely new foliage.
