Lupins wilting already?

CraighBCraighB Posts: 758

Hi guys,

I have some Lupins that I divided in Autumn. I then planted them in a little nursery bed over winter and I replanted them In the garden a few weeks ago. They are growing away nicely however I have noticed with the slightest bit of sun they are drooping even though it is still pretty cold here.

What could be wrong with them?

Thanks

Craigh

what's the soil like where they are?

  • I bet it's nothing more than wind and sun across the leaves causing them to struggle to keep up with water supply. I bet they stand up again overnight.

Well in autumn I added some well rotted manure as a mulch so and I did mix some into the soil too.

We do have quite high wind today H-C. Could that make them droop? They do recover as soon as the sun goes in.

I'm just worried that if they are like this now, what are they going to be like in the summer heat?

  • The new growth is ever so soft and water filled. I wouldn't worry. As the plant gains in strength it'll sort itself out.

The new young leaves are quite soft compared to full summer leaf and much more prone to wilting. A cold wind is more drying than warm sunshine for plants - it causes very rapid evaporation from the leaves so if it's cold and breezy where you are that may be what's causing it. If they are recovering well enough I wouldn't worry too much. You could cut a few of the bigger leaves off each plant to reduce evaporation while the roots get established if it's looking like the plant isn't recovering, or if they are fairly close together, put a cloche over them with a net rather than a plastic cover, to provide both some shade and a little wind break.

This happened to me year before last. I was mainly the larger leaves that were wilting. So I cut ALL of the bigger ones off like Raisingirl said and i get them a large water and it seemed to do the trick.
