Lilies congested in pots

Morning all!

I've got a couple of large(ish) pots which I've grown lilies in for a few years now.

However  I've noticed that they are coming through this year really congested in them.

Can I take them out, split them, and replant them?  Or will that kill them off?

Many thanks.

I did this last year and it rejuvenated them as well as giving me lots of spares to give away and sell at a charity plant fair.   Water the pot well to reduce stress and then tip out, separate and re-pot in good compost.   Some will be offsets that may need to grow on a bit before they're big enough to flower.

I would wait until after they have flowered to tip them all out and sort out. If you were very very careful you could do it now but it will set them back a bit.

I did mine last March and they were all fine.    I grow them all in pots and put them back into shelter from frosts after doing it.    Had a great display.

I don't think they'd flower very well hogweed if I left them, as it seemed they were too jammed in.

Took Oblixx's advice (and looked it up in an Alan Titchmarsh book and he said to do it now) and have just divided them, I watered them well first and they split up quite easily.  Got lots of new plants, which I will nurture until danger of frost has passed!

Thanks all!!  I love getting plants for free!!!
