plant to climb up dead bay tree

Hi

Im after some plant advice...

I have a dead 8ft bay tree in my small garden. Im looking for a climber to grow up it to make a feature of it and allow the birds to hide up in the growth.

Im looking for something that flowers and variegated would be a bonus, also something non invasive.

I thought of ivy but it would be to vigorous and invasive for my garden.

Any suggestions would be brilliant.

Thanks ☺

Clematis like armandii as it's evergreen for the birds to be protected all year round & will grow fast. A honeysuckle? Have a google.

  • Thanks for the response, im kind of new to gardening.

    Will take a look

    Thankyou

I have successfully trained Lady Banks Rose (climbers) successfully on dead tree.  They are thornless, repeat bloomer and these are easy to work up the trunk and branches.  Lovely in blooming season.  some photos:  https://images.search.yahoo.com/yhs/search?p=Lady+Banks+rose&fr=yhs-mozilla-001&hspart=mozilla&hsimp=yhs-001&imgurl=http://www.landscapeofus.com/garden-photos/lady-banks-rose-1000.jpg#id=5&iurl=http://www.landscapeofus.com/garden-photos/lady-banks-rose-1000.jpg&action=click

Another vote for honeysuckle here.  It's never happier than when its climbing up a tree - great for wildlife (nectar and berries) wonderful scent and straightforward to grow.

An evergreen clematis would be my choice - something that only grows to 8-10ft. A climbing or rambling rose may also work but be careful of the size.

I am training a honeysuckle to climb up a goat willow tree and so glad maybe I am doing the right thing since people here also suggested.

Precisely to say, it has not reached the tree yet. I planted it about a meter away from the tree and used a cane to guide it towards the tree. Does honeysuckle grow fast? I really hope it starts climbing this year. image

Honeysuckle grows fairly fast ........ but nothing like as fast as a goat willow ......... how much room have you got?

Haha Dove! You know my pain! The branches of the goat willow used to cover the whole width of the garden and I had a tree surgeon to prune it down A LOT. But every year I have to keep on top of pruning. It is manageable now image

Bees love its caterpillar type flowers so I just have to be friend with it. image
