Mercurialis perennis, commonly known as Dog's mercury,
It can spread very quickly and crowd out more desirable small plants. It has a rather unpleasant smell.

It's in a woodland patch of my garden so need to decide if I leave it there or not.
I believe it is a plant that indicates the woodland has been there for a long time.
Yes, the woodland in my garden has been there a long time - there is an old Roman villa a hundred metres away. I also have a lot of ground elder maybe due to the Romans as well!
I might leave the Dogs Mercury there rather than attempt to eradicate it - it seems to prefer the shade and hasn't really moved into the more formal beds a few metres away.
