ranunculus asiaticus

i bought some of these tubers earlier this year and planted them in small pots in the greenhouse. They have sprouted up nicely but I hear they are difficult to grow. Should I take them out of the greenhouse? Would they survive a frost? Do they need pinching out? If anyone has any tips or advice generally it would be very welcome.

  • They're tough plants, preferring cool but airy, frost free growing conditions. I'd grow them on a little longer under cover, so they don't get rain battered. My grower has his on capillary matting after their roots have hit the bottom of the pot and the first of his are now being sold, pots full of leaf, first buds showing.

Thanks Hortum. Should they just be planted up in pots do you think or is it a good idea to plant them out? Do they need dead heading? can they be left in the ground to come back the following year?

  • Plant them out, moist but free draining, in a sunny spot. Dead head, yes and they can be left. Just mark where they are because the foliage dies down. They'll come back next year, especially if they're protected from the fiercest of the cold.
