I love that clematis too Richard, I've got the purpurea version... another I would recommend for your purposes of growing on that Weigela is clematis x aromatica, ... I would train it towards and over the top...

Your clematis are wonderful... Been there some years I imagine?... my recta purpurea is quite floppy, which unfortunately sounds rather rude and suggestive...
I have clematis Westerplatte growing through smoke bush grace in late summer. The contrast of red of the clematis against the burgundy leaf of the smoke bush is quite stunning. I also have a purple flowered clemstis (the name evades me) growing through Weigela Florida Varrigated and again the contract of colours between the purple flower and the light variegated leaf of hue shrub is again a good match

I was trying to work out how long Marlorena. Might be 20 years. It seeds around providing babies to pass on.
I think I might need to find a purpurea, though mine are quite purple for the first few weeks.

Just remembered the purple flowered clematis is called Nike Warsaw
