Is this a wasp?

Hello, all. I'be had a good morning in the garden today; it's raining now so I had to stop. Can anyone tell me what insect this is? I've also seen a black bee (completely black) and a bit bigger, I thought, than the usual bee... Thank you.

Dove, thanks for the link to the bumble bee conservation website. I never realised we had so many different bumble bees native to the uk. Great website.
