Red Robin standards lost most of its leaves

I have 5 Red Robin standards which are approx 7 feet tall. They were professionally planted 2 years ago and soon after started loosing most leaves. I notice during this winter they have gone almost bare. The garden centre stated they had been imported from Italy and stored in containers but that they would recover. They suggested getting them pruned to encourage growth.

I notice leaves have black spots..

I also have some other Red Robins in the garden which are quite healthy but also have black spots on the leaves.

Are there any products on the market to salvage them?

Would pruning encourage growth and if so how much should they be cut back.

Should I attempt it this in spring or is it a question of replacing them. Any advice much appreciated

  • Cut them back, feed when they start into growth. It'll take time, but they are quite tough and should come back slowly.  Are they in containers now?  If so, that's probably the problem. They hate drying out in summer and although they might survive, they are left weak when winter arrives and can suffer as a result.
