Help needed by a serious non gardener !

Recently made a 4ft fence in garden to accommodate next doors overhanging trees . Came home last week and neighbour has cut down all his trees and shrubs leaving us with a very overlooked garden . Get on well with them but looking at a little privacy .

Thinking of trees with a 3-4ft trunk with a ball on top ( excuse my lack of knowledge ) .Something that doesn't really grow much taller and then can plant lower level shrubs invest week them .

The fence is about 5m long and is hand built and painted in a slate grey which is a feature that I don't want to totally obscure

What you want to do is called peaching

not sure of your gardening skill level but peaching is not easy to do or maintain but it does look lovely

Don't think the OP is describing pleached trees - trunk with a ball would be a standard. That would also be tricky to maintain  if they're against a fence, as you would need access to the other side to keep the shape.

You might be better just opting for a couple of trees or shrubs with a lighter canopy and an airy feel to them like birches (Betula) or Amelanchier. That would be easier for maintenance and you could underplant. You'll need to create a border with reasonable depth to accommodate all that though, if you don't have one there already. image

Prep your ground well and choose carefully for your site etc

You won't need a lot of shrubs for that distance. Good luck with it  image
