Creating a new raised bed
Dear Folks,
I am a keen gardener but my knowledge is pretty limited so please bear with.I am creating a new raised bed along the fence line of my property (putting in a very nice fence a Grange Contemporary Vogue to add some definition if anyone is remotely interested in that!) - anyway I'm having to remove some old shrubs and plants including an old rose bush and a bunch of tall green shrubs made up of green canes with small yellow flowers now coming into bloom. The bed I will put there will be about 18 inches to two feet deep I guess and my question is - if I cut all the shrubs of at existing ground level and then put the infill soil over the top to a depth of about two feet will that be sufficient to stop them popping up again at some later date or not? Is there anyting else I should do to avoid this happening apart from digging them all out which would be a big job. Many thanks in advance for your advice, Bron.

Probably - but roses have a habit of reappearing, and I wouldn't put it past what sounds like Forsythia, for the other shrub, doing the same.
I'd dig them out to get the job done properly, or use the brushwood killer - I think it's called SBK - which many people here recommend for getting rid of heftier wood.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Fairygirl! Forsythia - how right you are! That was clever. Yes it seems to pop up blimmin everywhere! Ok I will do as you say - the rose roots are pretty big but I will give it a go and apply the brushwood killer as well. I really apprecaite your reply - many thanks!
