Both the fushias and aquilegia plants were given to me as propagated plants by my neighbour. When I remember their garden with arches covered in rambling roses, a pond and water feature and big shrub and herbaceous boarders that had an all year round colour. Always thought then that they must have spent most of their time creating such a beautiful garden
I think I was barely ten when I went to a kind of temporary flea market near home to see the bargains. There was a stall selling pansies in small pots, in fact I only remember one with a very frugal red flower on a small plant, and I asked my mother to buy it. Being- eh let's face it- a bit cheap, she did not. Years later, growing my first batch of flowers from seed, they were pansies that took my attention most, and, until now, they are an important part of my garden interest.
For me it was owning my own home and having a garden in my late 20's. Spend the first 12 months renovating the inside then tackled the gardens. First purchase was Dutch Iris bulbs from Aldi and got hooked ever since. However they are not my favourite, it's got to be agapanthus

I would have to agree with what a lot of you have said and pick lawn grass as my most impact plant.
even though I don't have grass in my current garden.
