Lavender from seed

I sowed some lavender seeds last Autumn - a few germinated and now look like this.  They seem to be very slow growing.  How long do they take to mature enough to plant out and then to flower?image

I grew them, this year yours will probably send up one or two flower stalks, I cut them off to strengthen the plants. I planted them in some big troughs last year, they flowered and have survived the winter. So yours may do the same, main flowers next year, although you are a lot warmer where you are.

A lovely man from this site sent the seeds to me on the seed swap thread, ArchiePem, so if you ever look in Archie, they are still going strong, thank you.

  • That's reassuring to know Lyn, I know we are warmer, but we seem to be having less sun this year, too much fog and damp.

I will plant them out in a month or so, and hope for flowers next year.  I collected the seed from some lavender that our neighbour had last summer but which has since died off.

Don't be in a rush to plant them out GD, maybe May/June.  They may do better being potted on once more before going out.

I have never had much luck from seeds but very easy to raise from cuttings in summer.

  • I have never had any luck with cuttings jaffacakes - somehow cuttings don't often work for me, except for Budehlia - I just haven't got the luck for cuttings.  I picked and sowed about 50 lavender seeds and got about 15 that have germinated. I used poor soil with gravel - very little watering (early October when it was still warm in our cold GH).
