Interesting plant ID please

GuybrushGuybrush Posts: 172

Hi folks,

Whilst on a little trip to Swanage earlier, I noticed this interesting plant growing near the car park. It looks rather tropical and was growing in rather an exposed position on the sea front. It was about 6 foot high with lots of limbs coming from a central point on the ground. Any ideas?

Cheers

James

Unusual time of year to be flowering, normally late summer and only in hot years.

Thanks for the identification Nutcutlet! I've never seen one before. It was thriving, maybe there's a mini micro-climate there I don't know ?.  Pictures are from today.

I like these but they didn't do well for me. If the mild winters continue I might have another go

I have one, the only survivor of four I grew from seed. It gets potted up in the winter and kept in the porch. It is now four years old, so maybe a doer.

I had one in our last garden in Hants. Survived with winter there on sandy soil but eventually gave in to honey fungus.

I bought 2 last year but kept them in the tunnel over the winter but they're going out this year and they can fend for themselves from then on.

I think I might try and get one and see how it goes. I have quite sandy soil (well pretty much dust in the summer). It should be quite happy in the warmer months and maybe put it in the greenhouse over winter.

    Thanks for the info.

    James :-)
