Droopy Magnolia Flowers

Hello everyone,

not sure how these pictures will show up.

I recently got a potted small magnolia tree and I started the care inside because Glasgow is very windy and cold right now. It's blossomig and growing amazingly fast.

What I came here to ask is about the flowers, they come out strong and pointing up and then the next day the petals are pointing down and are shriveled, not dead, still very alive but it looks very strange.

Also the flowers only last 2-3 days, before losing petals, but little fresh leaves are coming through.....

Im getting mixed signals here ha ha ha...

Any advice?

I think inside is the problem. Too hot and dry at the wrong time of year.

I don't think they like it indoors Jools, they are pretty hardy.  Your flowers look like they are drooping because they are too warm.

  • Oh wow who'd have known! I thought I ask doing it good. So you think they'll survive in my front garden even though it's cold and windy?

The flowers are vulnerable to frost (the tree itself will be fine).  If its still small enough to bring it in on frosty nights you can do, but get it back out during the day.

Once it gets bigger, then all you can do is cross your fingers for no frosts in March and April image. The sort you have (its a stellata) is a bit more frost resiliant than the tulip flowered ones.

I live in Surrey, and have a few magnolias - I love them dearly, but do spend most March/Aprils obsessing about whether the frosts are coming to spoil the show for the yearimage
