private hedge llosing winter leaves
Hi,
my private hedge always looses it leaves in winter, it is not in a shade area, however some of my neighbours leaves are lush and green, what can I do about it?
Thanks
Keith

Some of the ligustrum ovalifolium (the one more commonly used for heging) and ligustrum vulgare (narrower leaf), types are more susceptible to the cold and as a result, lose their leaves to protect themselves. It is naturally semi-deciduous, especially where cold can get to it. Where it is sheltered (and it may only be a matter of a degree or so) it will keep its leaves. It may be that you'll have to grin and bear it.

As Hortum-cretae has said, some do lose their leaves in cold spells - but you get the benefit of lovely fresh growth very soon afterwards.
Have you ensured that there's no rubbish/dead grass/weeds etc in the bottom of the hedge and that there's some clear soil along it's length so that you can feed it with Fish, Blood & Bone and then mulch it with compost, leaf mould or well rotted manure? That should give it a boost.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Thanks chaps, I will try feeding with horse muck, as it has not been fed for 16 years at least. It is a very long hedge, so this will be the most practical solution.

It happens to mine too Keith after a severe period of frost but always recovers and grows like wild fire - you should see buds present now.
