Dear Gardeny friends, I spot this plant (shrub?) near the office. I quite like it. It is about 170cm tall and carries many yellow flowers. Do you know what it is? I would like to have one in my garden. I am also wondering if i can take cutting from it?Thank you indeed!! :-)

    Thanks punkdoc!!

I googled it and it can be propagated by softwood/new shoots. I am going to look for some new shoots on this one.

Does it grow slowly from this method? or maybe I should just buy a 3L plant to save me time? image

  • Kerria usually grows very well it sometimes grows out from the main plant on a runner. If you are able have a look around the plant and if you see a runner off it ( as long as it's got some roots )cut it off and replant. They usually take really well.

nice plants but they can be invasive if they like where they are growing.

Thanks Chrissy! I am going to have a look. Hopefully people passing by won't consider me weird or trying to kill the plant. image

You should ask the owner before you start taking bits off a plant.

Kerria japonica is easily available in most garden centres and, as has been said, it can be invasive if happy because it will sucker freely.  Be aware also that its flwoering period is really very short and that it is then desperately dull, IMHO, for 51 weeks of the year.

Thanks Obelixx for your advice! Very helpful!

It is in a communal area surrounded by buildings. I am not sure who to ask for permission.

Your advice about the short flowering period does make me hesitate. I would like some tall plants in the back border but at least flower for 3-4 weeks a year. Maybe it is not the ideal one?

Chrissy-I looked but could not find runners.
