Dwarf Medlar Westerveldt - do I need to prune it?

Hi

Apologies for being back so soon with another pruning question...!  This time it's my Dwarf Medlar Westerveldt, which was bought as a Mini Bush (5.5 Litre pot) last year, and was 4 years old at that stage (so 5 years old now).  It is still in a pot at the moment, but I'm hoping to get it into the ground asap.  It currently stands around 1.5 metres / 5 foot tall.

Does anyone have one of these or have any knowledge as to whether they need pruning?  If so, any tips on how to prune it?

Here's some photos:

Many thanks as ever

  • You want to prune it to help get a nice open centred bush and to prevent branches crossing each other.

From your pictures it doesn't look like there are any dead or damaged branches.

Maybe take a third off the taller main branch pruning to an outward facing bud.

Strictly speaking it is best to prune fruit bushes in winter while dormant so it is best to do any pruning ASAP.
