Moving Asparagus

I've just dug up some asparagus crowns that were themselves moved from an old allotment about three years ago. Where i planted them there has been too much competition from other plants so I have dug up to create a dedicated bed.
The crowns have diminished a little from when I first moved them but are still in about 1 ft square clumps.
Should I try and remove the soil from around the crowns before replanting or leave intact?
