Moving an establish Rosemary bush

Hello guys and girls,  I'm after a bit of advice, our landlords are  dividing up our garden and selling off part of it for development because of this I need to relocate several plants ASAP.  One of them is an established Rosemary bush - it's about a metre and a half tall and possibly just shy of a metre wide - we've been here for three years and it was a fair size when we took the garden over so I'm guessing it's quite old but in great condition.  I have space to pop it in a similar situtaion in another section of the garden (the soil I would say is more or less the same too). My question is - can they be successfully moved? I really don't want to loose it so I'm loathed to leave it to the mercy of the the builders but at the same time I have no idea if it's worth the effort that it will take to get it out!

Any thoughts gladly received!

  • Thanks Pansyface!  Was literally just thinking that might need to be plan B.... The only problem is I'm loosing my greenhouse too, would cuttings be ok kept outside or should they be inside on one of our windowsills?

  • East Sussex! OK, thank you for the link and advice. ☺️

Rosemary cuttings will be fine in a sheltered spot outside. Use plenty of grit in the compost and you'll find it strikes quickly and grows away well. image

I moved a large rosemary bush - just dug it up and plonked it in the new spot. Took a while to re-establish but it's fine. Also cuttings are really easy - just add grit to the compost and do loads. I did about 400 last year and 90% are doing fine (fingers crossed).

  • Thanks guys!  I'll take plenty of cuttings and if I feel strong enough I'll oof it out as well!

Slightly off post topic but as I'm here now I'll ask... Salvia Hot Lips... Need to move that too!  Would it fair ok in a SW position?
