Hedge looking very thin in places
The last year or two I've noticed that the hedge on the front of my house is getting really patchy. Children would run and jump at the hedge so I thought this was the problem but now they have stopped doing that the hedge isnt looking any better it's looking dead inside. I've scratched at the bark and it's quite green. I have a large shrub behind the hedge could this be the problem, no light getting to the back plus it sucking all the water? New to gardening to please can you help? Thank you

The large gap in the first picture looks as if it's caused by a lack of sunlight. I don't see any reason why the second wouldn't recover, privet often shed some leaves over winter and then come back in abundance in Spring - I wouldn't worry too much. They are fast growing and tough as old boots. If you want, you could feed with some fish, blood & bone, gently forked into the soil below.

Thank you so much for your reply. I've been saying that this shrub needs cutting right back but hubby loves how it looks. I will do what you suggest and feed the hedge. Thanks x
