Recommendations for plants for pots
Hi all, although I have a lovely front and back garden, I have an area of patio outside my conservatory and to the side of the house that is underused. I would like to place some pots around that patio to help create a relaxing seating area. Can anyone recommend me some plants that are suitable for life in pots (of all sizes). I would like plants that generate colour (whether from flowers or changing foliage), are hardy and will return year after year. All advice welcome
I'm a real novice gardener so have no idea when it comes to plant varieties!

Sorry forgot to mention - would also like to consider plants that give off nice scents
Our garden is mainly patio and tarmac so we are growing many things in pots this year, many of which are hardy. So far we have lavenders, rosemary, sage, dwarf bottlebrush, cape gooseberry, fuchsias both bush and trailing, dwarf buddleia, primroses, pansies and cyclamen plus bedding plants like marigolds as we are growing tomatoes in large pots and begonias. I also know that patio roses are good in pots as well

You will need to make sure that you use decent sized pots as they will hold more water and as such won't dry out as quickly. We are using 50cm diameter by 50cm depth pots. We are buying a lot of our plants quite small and potting them on into larger pots to get better root balls on them before planting them out into their final position

Not sure if patio roses have any scent but that would be my first choice if they have. Look at the websites of rose growers to get info. Next fragrant shrub would be a daphne odorata. Sarcoccoca humilis has lovely winter scent but too hot for it on a patio, best in a slightly shady situation.
