Yes Verdun - the moisture we both get is a big factor for those plants. Warmth and long seasons certainly aren't!
Again - it's about looking at where a plant originates, and it's conditions there. The closer you are to replicating that, the better a plant will grow. Simples
We can often grow plants in slightly different conditions without any real problems, but they may not grow as successfully as they would in their own 'backyard'.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
It's funny Verd - I could easily grow those hydrangeas, but I loathe the colour of them! The pink ones too - sickly, sugary colour
I only like them when they turn in autumn. If I had a garden with them already in it, I'd either have to remove them, or grow something in front of them in summer to hide the flowers!

I think I've become more accepting of conditions as I get older and slightly wiser
There are things I'd like to grow, but my climate doesn't suit. It's simply a question of finding an alternative. Pittosporums spring to mind. I can't alter the temperatures unfortunately
The raised beds I made are useful in that respect. I could grow plants that need sharp drainage next to bog lovers. It's the best solution for growing things when you have the 'wrong' soil too, which is appropriate for this thread
