Plum Tree

LucyLLucyL Posts: 163

Hi everyone,

I have recently moved house, when we moved in i descovered we have a plum tree at the back corner, it looks pretty neglected but did produce some fruit  (tho all fruit skins split)

So this year i am planning on having a rockery in the corner of the garden where the plum tree (and various other trees and bushes and weeds are)

But i intend to keep the plum tree. Yesterday i dug up alot of the other trees etc beside and around it. but only just read that plum trees need another plum tree to produce plums...

but i didnt see another plum tree there, it was certainly the only tree that produced plums. Could one of the other trees have been another plum tree and i've dug it up?

Also there was alot of little shoots that i dug up that i thought were a different weed as they wernt connected to the plum tree. (see photos) They were at the base of the plum tree as well as further over.

Thanks

  • Hi Lucy. Some plum trees are self-pollinating so don't need another plum tree. I have a Victoria plum which is one of these. My plum tree does send up a lot of suckers though, which is probably what your thin shoots are. I just cut them off as low down as I can when they appear.

Thank you Singing Gardener for the information, Time will tell as to whether or not mine is self pollinating. also for letting me know about the suckers, there were alot of them, and seemed to be alost everythere around and along from the plum tree.
