ROSES

Please help.  My roses were covered in New leaves yesterday and today I find them stripped of all leaves with just the centre leave stalk still there.  Whole rose bushes have been stripped of leaves overnight!

  • Do you have rabbits around? Mine were stripped by rabbits in the first year I planted them so I've now surrounded them with mesh to keep the rabbits away!

Oh my goodness!  Rabbits!  I thought Caterpillar beetles all sorts of things but never rabbits!!

I guess spraying with Rosecare is not going to help much then? LOL

Never spray unless you know what you're spraying against - it's a waste of money, and you could be killing the goodies that eat the baddies. image

I thought that might be the case image  hence the friendly image

It was more of a general observation as these threads get looked at by people doing a Search on the forum ... didn't mean to imply that you had  done it image

Deer are another possibilty if you live anywhere rural, especially in areas where muntjac are now common.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Thanks for all the advice guys.  I had a very careful look today, some of the stripped branches are on the inside of the rose bushes, not inline with a bunny or a deer although you are spot on we live in the middle of a big farm in a very rural area, but no sign of rabbit or deer droppings.  I am going to check if there are any caterpillars lurking under the soil tomorrow.

I've just been outside at 5 minutes to midnight with a torch to see if I can find caterpillars, there are none, wish I could send you all some photos....

BobtheGardner I am beginning to think you could be right but if do, how do I protect my roses?   Without harming the wildlife which I love and treasure...
