Rose in a pot but roots burrowed out!
We are in a rented house so we can only dig things up so much! This rose is very well established, the roots went though this pot a long time ago.
Any suggestions on how we can get rid of the pot and replant the foot and a half or so of root that was in the pot without destroying the plant and the surrounding area!

If it were me, I'd cut off the pot (I'm assuming it's plastic), then dig underneath as close to the root as poss - this will leave a hole you can fill in.
You'll probably find that the root goes down a long way. I recently dug up some old roses and potted them up and I did damage the lower roots but I did it by slicing with a sharp spade. They are both doing fine in their pots but I did this in autumn so they've been relaxing over winter behind the shed and are now both budding.
I cut a fair amount off the tops too to reinvigorate them.
Best of luck.
Poor rose. I'm afraid I would have to take drastic action, which can still be done at this time of year. I would lift the pot enough to sever the roots that have grown through the base.
Then either remove the rootball from the pot and plant in the ground somewhere, [no need to cut it back much]... or..
repot in a much larger, square, pot [b and q have some on offer right now, large tall plastic ones] but obviously this will require a considerable amount of soil based compost as well.. so it will cost money.
Another alternative, and I'm not terribly sentimental, is to yank the lot out and discard it. Buy something else if you wish, annuals or something, and grow that in the pot..
It doesn't look very nice as it is, does it?...
