Do you mean like hardy annuals? Like poppies and Love in a Mist. Last year I saw them growing together in someone's garden and it was really pretty. I like the Ladybird poppies, they looked lovely at Great Dixter.

Yes busy, but I was wondering if there were any unusual plants that might work. I was thinking of something to scatter near the bulbs so that they can get started while I wait for the bulb  leaves to die back

Unusual plants are unusual for various reasons. One is that they are tricky to germinate/grow on.

I think the combination of 'unusual' and 'chuck and grow'  will be difficult to find in a packet of seeds.

For me Ladybird poppies were unusual, I've never seen them in France, Great Dixter a couple of years ago was the first time.

I've never seen Ammi Majus here either, except in my garden last year. Bought the seeds in England.

Good points nut & busy. Perhaps not exotic more the less usual suspectsimage

I suppose I could empty out the loose seeds in the bottom of my seed box and see what comes up. If anything does, I'll probably be posting for IDs!

Angelica? Stipa gigantica? Either might grow if you hit lucky. I've grown rugosa roses and rowan from seed - not chuck and grow but they grew easily so probably would have worked. Astrantias are supposed to come easily from seed, although that's not been my experience

I've always fancied angelica . Knowing the size of it,and my luck, it's guaranteed to grow if I sow it in the front of the borderimage

yep, that's how it works. Grass is the worst. It won't - will not - grow where I want a lawn. Stuff comes up all through the flower borders happy as a sock. image

Happy as a sock. I've never heard it before. Love it. Will use it even if it was a typoimage

Not a typo image Got it from a very nice lady I 'know' on another forum. She got it from her Dad, apparently. Feel free to use it. image
