Fruit tree pruning - Spring or Winter, where are we?

I understand that meteorologically spring starts on 20th March. Having searched google, internet says the same. I was led to believe that pruning apple/pear trees is done in spring however I'm also given advice to prune in winter but avoid early Spring (and to prune in summer).
