We're having building work done and the Rooks are carrying off the insulation! I paid for that!
We also brush the dogs on the lawn and it's great to see birds coming in for it. Another thing we do is fill old green mesh from fat balls with dross from the tumble dryer. We hang it below the bird feeder and they come and get it.
I read this thread because I'm planning a pond and it's given me an idea, thank you. I have old York stone pieces that I've sort of made into a scruffy dry stone wall at the bottom of my privet hedge but we're doing that part of the garden up as part of the building work and it no longer fits the style so I can repurpose.
Hi Cloggie, great idea ref the tumble dryer dross for the birds but I've read many times that the nets used for fat balls are a real danger / hazard to birds who can get caught up. The advice is always to put the balls in a feeder after removing the netting. I wonder if the same could / should apply for a nest-matter 'feeder'? Just a thought.
Yes good thought Dave, I picked up an empty green mesh thing as I do when I see them and chucked it in the summerhouse so that nothing can get caught up in it (that was from a different part of the garden that has one of those fat ball katherine wheel things). I will tell the OH to take the balls out of the mesh and chuck them.
The one with the dross in is very securely tied in but I take your point.
Wondering if an old stocking with holes in it tied to a tree branch would be a good dross hanger? Unappealing from a human point of view but the birds might find it useful. Could top up with a bit of hay/straw to pad it out?
