Pond planting calculations

Is there a standard rule for the quantity of plants in a pond according to litres or cubic metres or do I just put as many plants as I feel it needs?

Haven't seen any rules for plants in ponds apart from oygenators. Just pop them in to suit you.

Hi if you go on to pond plant suppliers they have calculations EG puddle plants

A collection of native plants for a 120 sq ft (11.2 sq mtrs) pond upto 4ft (1.2m) deep with marginal shelves up to 18" (450mm) deep.
The collection will consist of the following plants and accessories.
    3 Deep water plants
    12 Oxygenators
    40 Assorted marginals
    10 planting baskets (for marginals)
3 planting baskets (for deep water plants)

Will include good selection of plants, for example Water plantain, Flowering rush, Marsh marigold, Square stemmed St John's wort, Yellow loosestrife, Marsh woundwort, Purple loosestrife, Water mint, Bog bean, Water forget me not, Common watercress, Water crowfoot, Lesser spearwort, Cotton grass, Hornwort, Sweet garlingale, Soft rush, Hard rush, Sedge hop, Yellow flag, Brooklime and Water figwort.  Plants are supplied in 7cm and 9cm pots and bare root.

Planting in baskets you would need to purchase 36 litres of soil and 9 litres of gravel.

This collection is available without planting baskets if you wish to plant directly into soil.

I had made a post on this thread earlier, but got the dreaded error message so gave up.

i actually said....just bung in whatever you fancy and if they get too big in two years time oik them out. Put in plenty of oxygenators, you can always thin out later, I started off with two different types, only ten strands of each, last year and this I will be filling the compost bin with it.

you can have plenty of mine if you want, and I think Hosta has offered some water lilies?

shows how different we work Jeff?

  • Thanks for the comments, our pond is 17 cubic metres or 17,000 litres with a depth of approx 3'6" at the deepest part. I was just trying to figure out how many plants we would need, and from the measurements you have provided Zenjeff that is quite a lot of plants, in fact a huge amount.

Yes, Lyn, I haven't forgotten of your and Hosta's kind offers of plants, and we should be ready in another month or so.  I still can't believe how long this project has taken, and to be quite honest I will be glad when we have finished.  It started so long ago in the dim and distant past, but we will get there eventually!
