alternative to grass
Hi,
I have a back garden where I laid a new grass bed on top of a new soil bed with matting but the problem is that the grass grew perfectly well and was green on top but when I cut it [after about 7 weeks] it was dry and rotten underneath. I tried most things like adding grass feeder, nutrients etc but nothing worked.
I noticed after heavy rainfall that large water patches remained on top of the grass as I don't think the drainage is that great, maybe this is the problem? [This is Easylawn brand designed for walking on purchased from a a main garden centre]
Ideally I'd like to know what the problem might be but I am considering something else to use in it's place; I'm not sure but something like a moss type base or sedum type base, generally something that can be walked on but it would be very rarely.

What sort of matting did you put under the grass? I would imagine that could be causing some drainage issues.
If you decide to ditch the grass, creeping thyme is very pretty, and would release a lovely smell when its walked on, however, I'm not sure if it would like soggy conditions to grow in, so you may still have to look at your drainage first
