Grass help

Hi guy's, I am new to the gardening world so please be gentle, I had a new lawn in garden put down in December 2015 (when we had all the torrential rain) and it never seemed to soe correctly and is now very patchy. I have two dogs  that play on the grass so I know it's never going to be perfect but does anyone have any ideas on  any seed I can put down that will help cover the patches and make my grass stronger and thicker, I did try something last spring but it didn't seem to work......thank you in advance!

  • Hi Magicabdab, grass is starting to grow now and what you could start off my doing is applying a weed and feed mix and in about 2 weeks give it a right good scarify to lift any dead grass / moss up.

I would then suggest to aerate it and apply a top dressing with a mixture of hardy rye grass (as you've got dogs). This is what I do every spring and get really good results.

There are some fantastic guides in YouTube that you can use for reference should you get stuck image

  • Having 2 dogs playing on a new lawn is asking a lot of any grass seed. Ideally the dogs should be kept off it until it is well established, twelve months probably, which I am guessing is a bit of a no no. Also, if either or both of them are bitches, every time they wee on the grass, the urine will kill the grass, unless you wash the area with a bucket of clean water every time the dog/s use the lawn as a toilet. If the lawn develops yellow patches,  blame the dog/s. Another problem with 2 dogs playing is that they will rip up the grass at root level when they skid, if they are very active youngsters. Also, when eventually you achieve a lawn, never cut it very short as that leaves it open to more damage.

It could take 2/3 years to get a tough lawn established. Good luck. Patience is a virtue, so they say!

Agree with Joyce, if it's yellow burn patches it's from the high levels of nitrogen in their pee. It's the same with my male dog too unfortunately, going to try to train him to pee in a certain barked spot, many of my friends have done the same.
