i took some cuttings a few months ago (dogwood, forsythia, red robin etc) and put them in soil. When should I check whether or not they have rooted?

I leave them until the end of the following year. If they have rooted they will start growing in Spring. If poor growth, they may have few roots, and disturbing may knock them off.  Strong growth would indicate a good root system.

Snap! Fidget, I leave cutting of shrubs at least 12 months before disturbing them.
