Soil mix for outdoor succulents etc.

My compost mix of equal parts John Innes No.3,Cat Litter and Grit is fine for my indoor succulents but do you think it is OK for succulents outside in containers and pots (mostly Sempervivums and sedums) which stay out all year round in all weathers.Would the cat litter hold too much moisture over the winter? Would replacing some of the cat litter with grit be better?

Cat litter? What type? Most cat litter clump when wet so I would never dream of adding it to any compost.
a mix of JI and sharp sand is all you need for either indoor or outdoor succulents.
The cat litter is the red clay type and perfectly OK for plants! It dries out quite quickly and does not clump. It looks like this!
The cat litter looks great on top of the pot for indoors, but if that was outside, I would be wary of it attracting local cats to use it as a toilet
Never seen cat litter like that before. It looks more like the clay hydroponic stuff we buy here. Are you in the UK Madpenguin?
Yes I am in the UK (Isle of Wight).
The litter is a type of red moler clay.
The cat litter I use is Sophisticat.
You can also get a similar one from Tesco which is supposed to be slightly finer.Very good for succulent cuttings.
i find clay pebbles works really well for drainage mix into your soil or coco coir and add a layer to the bottom of the pot http://www.grow-world.co.uk/growing-media/plagron-euro-pebbles
