Wet Garden
I hope somebody can offer me some advice. We have been in our newly built house 3 years and the drainage in our garden has got worse due to the clay soil put there by the builders before placing the top soil on top of it. I have been told we require shoaling etc. We are trying to plant some trees for privacy and would like some advice, I planted 30 laurels but they all gradually died off because of the wet soil. Will fir trees cope with the wet conditions or should I consider putting in a raised bed and then planting my trees? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

We have similar issues. When we dug a hole there was water that never went away. We did have the developers put in land drains and although we still have heavy clay, we dug down today and water does not gather. Can you consider that? My birch are surviving.
We do however have concrete foundations for a large retaining wall surrounding our garden. The soil is between 1 to 2 feet deep so we are still having to put in raised beds. Very depressing!
I want to provide an environment for wildlife and I think developers should be contributing to provide adequate materials to work with.
