Pruning Jasmine

bobloesbobloes Posts: 134

Hi All

I was listening to GQT on radio 4 and Christine was saying that jasmine should be pruned now and that it should be taken back to a couple of buds of the main stem.  Then I have read that it should be cut down to the ground every year.  Any advice please?  I have included a couple of photos of mine, it is on a north facing wall and about 4/5 years old.  I live in Weymouth. Thanks

  • There are several. Yours is winter jasmine, and pruning would be after flowering, a tidy up, really.  Remove some of the oldest wood to encourage and give room for strong new growth to be made.  A feed would do no harm then, either.

I have a well established Winter Jasmine too and I prune it back every year to encourage new growth.. I cut back the old wood probably 40 to 50%.. It works great for me..

THanks very much for your replies but I am still unsure whether I should be cutting back the old wood including the centre stem and say down to the ground?  Or just the 'branches'?  Thanks

I wouldn't cut the main stem,..just the branches where they hang down. No point in having a tressis if you did that,,Yours  looks fine.. I do not have a trellis so mine is more bushy.. just keep mibe a little compact because I habe roses in the same area..
