slope, tree stumps and other animals

Can anyone help, I have a very small front garden, we are talking 10x10 ft

Until a couple of weeks ago it was completely overshadowed by three huge conifers - luckily wind and age resulted  in the tree surgeon removing all three - I now want to realise a dream of a cottage garden - but I have three stumps, roots and a slope to contend with.

I am thinking of raided beds this will overcome both the slope and the roots issue... but would love some other suggestions.

For the people out there who think I am mad, I managed last year despite the conifers at over 20 feet to grow, delphiniums, roses, crocosmia, cosmos, hollyhocks, and a variety of plants in a patch 5 x 2ft - so I know l can do it.

But where to start on a bigger scale - and with the slope and the stumps... the garden gets full sun all morning

Raised beds sound good, plus plenty of added oraganic matter.  We have a veg bed where a row of the dreaded leylandii once stood.  We had the stumps ground out (by a man with a stump grinder) and fished out loads of roots, but have been growing things successfully ......just keep piling on the muck !

I think it would be worthwhile to invest in a man with a stump grinder. No need then for raised beds nor the cost of filling them.  And the slope should be no bother - you cant have much of a slope in 10 feet unless you live on a cliff edge.
