Yes Lyn, in the ground. I planted about 10 and I think I've lost about 3 and have 3 or 4 which should flower. The "runty" ones are still in pots, alive, so I'll plant them out this year and let them fend for themeselves.

    Thanks again.

Great, they don't like being in pots, best in the ground.

  • I have never collected the seed Lyn, just let them do their own thing.  I assume you collect seed once the flowers have finished - do you just shake the plant and catch the seed or cut the finished flowers off the plant and let them dry out before removing the seeds?

Mostly the seedlings come up where the mother plant was the year before, but some find their way into unwanted places like slap bang in the middle of a flower bed, so I remove those before they start to take over the flower bed.

I dont collect them anymore unless anyone wants them. I bought the seeds in the first place, now I just leave them to self sow.

Sorry, should have said before { edit facility doesn't work}  I don't cut the flower stem off, just shake into my hand, when they fall away on their own they are ripe and ready for sowing.

  • I'll try that this year if I remember to catch them before the flower seeds all drop to the ground.  Have you ever been to the Scilly Islands Lyn - I have seen that they grow in abundance there.

No I haven't, should really, you know what it's like when you live in a place, you just dont go, well, I don't.??

I do go to Eden and Heligan very often though as my daughter lives very close to both.

  • Yes, they do have a few exotics there, on the islands - not been but watched Island Parish when they filmed there a year or two ago. Eden and Heligan both interest me, you are lucky to get there Lyn, but I won't be able to go now.

We went to Kew many years ago but I wasn't so into gardening then. Pity as their exotics are out of this world.
