privacy fast hedging

Sam 92Sam 92 Posts: 68

Hello everyone after much thought of what i need from hedging and the space i have wanting evergreen fast growing pollutant absorbing and noise reduction ive narrowed it down to either cherry laurel as main hedging screen with poplars intermittenly planted inbetween the laurel hedging to give height privacy and laurel for bulk lower max 7ft screening. Other idea that has came forward is a upright clumping bamboo? I live in a terrraced house surronded by neighbours so want fast growing upright evergreen my problem is lack of space plenty upright space but for width i can only sacrifice about a max of 2-3ft wide so that puts me off laurel and lean more towards upright bamboos? I'll be spending a fortune on my state of a garden in couple weeks so any advice much appreiciated. Ive tried to attach photos to give you a idea of how much space im working with. Many thanks Samimage

    Hi Sam image

Are you removing the fences or planting inside them?  Cherry laurel is a bulky hedge - I think it'll be too bulky for your space.  Also whatever you do, don't plant poplars there - they're huge trees with a potential to reach between 50 - 170 ft tall!!!  Their roots will also damage your drains and the foundations of your home and those in the neighbourhood.

Most bamboos are also invasive and if planted in the ground without anything to restrict the roots they'll spread across your garden and invade those of your immediate neighbours.

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but if I were you I'd do what we've done here - erect sturdy fences with sturdy trellis panels above them, to grow a variety of deciduous and evergreen climbing shrubs to cover them.

To add to privacy you can erect plant covered pergolas for sitting out areas.

Hello dovefromabove within the fence line aye i had a feeling i knew cherry laurel got to bulky but to stubborn ? what evergreen sound reduction hedging ypu suggest? the poplars i know get big fast thats why i liked the idea of them to block views of neighbours back attached houses that tower over my garden and surrounding houses all look into my garden thats why im wanting fast upright growing hedging and stratically planted trees to block vision ive dealt removing alot of bamboo at my work and its tough going so id plan to make underground planters for them along the fence lines as they growing much upright still give me border space i have time and happy to keep fast growing trees etc pruned and trimmed. Im putting fencing panels all along im doing one pergola over the square random cenent patch that will be seating area as gets lots of sun. I just have so many ideas and plans haha its like a blank canvas so excited but ideas keep changing ?i essentially want to walk out my back door and feel like im in a forest away from hussle and bussle as my garden has always been my zen zone out from the world i have alot of work to do on it ?

Fully agree with Dove.  If you take up one row of slabs along the line of each fence, you will have room to erect tall trellis (eg 8ft/2.5m) by setting in posts.  Looking at the way the fences have been built, with the 'good' side facing your garden, those may belong to your neighbours so I wouldn't attach trellis to them directly, unless your neighbours agree.  You can then grow a multitude of climbers including clematis, roses etc.  Together with a pergola you can achieve this sort of thing:

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Think Bob's just done that, Sam!

I built a screen in my garden a couple of years ago. Fairly straightforward to do, and could be even simpler than mine. It's just posts concreted in with vertical battens, but you can get ready made trellis if you don't want to make them. Mine had to fit a certain space, and I also made a raised box at each end for planting.
