Root problems / seating area

Good afternoon, I am after advice if anyone has time.

I have began removing a concrete patio area due to their dated look and the fact the slabs have been pushed up by roots.

Could anyone suggest the easiest way to level this area to avoid the roots causing trouble again for a few years?

Would putting a few layers of sand down provide enough stability for a seating area?

I have considered putting artificial grass down in this area to give a 2x4m seating area which would blend in with the rest of the garden however I am not sure if my abilities would stretch much beyond just laying sand as a base.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Mike, can you dig over that ground and remove those roots?  Are there any trees locally responsible for those roots? image

     Thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately the roots appear to come from two of my trees about a meter or 2 away from the area.

Not sure I want to remove them just in case it kills the trees?

I was looking for something a bit more sturdy to sit on etc, however that would be an easy way to deal with the root problem.
