Trough planters

Looking for recommendations for trough planters, to go alongside a fence. Terracotta or stone. I've found none at all in local garden centres! Are the fibrecotta ones sold on primrose.co.uk going to be awful? Any pointers please? Nothing ornate needed, but they need to be fairly long as we want several to line up along 5m or so of fence. Thanks.

  • I know you said terracotta or stone, but they're fearsomely pricey and heavy. Considered cattle troughs? Available at various country stores. Just need drainage holes drilled low on the sides

Thanks, do you mean metal ones? It's for a very sunny spot so I worry metal planters would get very very hot.

  • They're nice and shiny so reflect the heat and as they fade so the sun's effects are lessened. I've never had a problem using them.  If you use a few trailing plants for the front edge that would diffuse the sun's rays. What's going in 'em, bamboo, to screen something?

I have some fibrecotta pots dark grey colour, I personally think they look quite well and are light enough to move around.

Thanks! This is all v helpful. I just wish i could go and see the fibrecotta ones in person. They're not cheap either but I can see that being less heavy is a good thing. Yorkshire Flowerpots seem to sell some 71cm terracottta troughs for about £30 each which isn't too bad at all.
