Hostas

I have two beautiful hostas in pots, which they have been in for 5 years now, they still look great, but should I repot them on? If so when

Now would be a good time Denise while they are still dormant. They are as tough as old boots and very difficult to kill off. Mine were in pots for years and I couldn't get them out they were so congested. In the end I had to smash the pots with a hammer (which was strangely satisfying ?) I used a spade to cut them into smaller pieces and potted on into new pots with John Innes no3 compost with some Blood, fish and bonemeal mixed in. I then had lots of new plants to share with friends and family.

Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late.

I had a look at those I have in pots this afternoon. Lots of scope to make new ones for me too.

Do you know which varieties you have Denise?

If they are really big, I'd leave one big chunk  ( about 1/3 ) and split what's left into smaller plants if you can. Then you still have a nice specimen and some babies to grow on.
