Worst winter

I was 10 towards the end of January 63. Main memories are that we kept thinking the thaw was coming but then it would re-freeze and snow again. Even in a London suburb people struggled, though not as much as you guys in the country. At school eventually the boys in my class got so fed up with being confined at break time we offered to clear the playground ourselves. The Head eventually agreed but we only just got it done a couple of weeks before the thaw. All the snow was piled up on the playing field and it took several weeks more to thaw than other areas. The man who looked after the playing field moaned like mad that we had ruined the football pitch! The most fun was sledging in one of the parks a couple of miles away, there were 2 steep hills & my uncle got a very big sledge made where he worked. It had stainless steel runners & was very fast with all of us on it. Either my Dad or Uncle at the back steering with their feet the rest of us sat  in line in between everyone else's legs. Being the youngest I was always at the front, very exiting but also the worst spot if we crashed! I still have the scars on my Knees to prove it ! We went every Saturday/Sunday for weeks because we couldn't do anything on the Allotments.

The Express dairy put out an appeal for milk bottles as they were running low, after the thaw everyone found loads that had got buried & locked into all the piles of snow & ice.

    AB Still learning
