Can anyone name this plant?

Looking to identify this plant in our new garden.

Thanks!

  • It looks to me like a rather tangled and venerable Clematis Montana. When we see the flowers we'll probably be able to make a good stab at which one.

After it's flowered this spring we'll help you to give it a good seeing to so it's a bit more controlled and is able to look it's best.

    I agree Dove.

  • Thank you Dove, and Punkdoc. Super helpful. I'll post again once it's flowered!

I think I spotted a very similar one at a clients property. Will you be pruning it?

    How do you prune it?

All the way to the twisted stem?

  • Pruning Montana can be tricky. What should be done periodically is the removal of some of the oldest shoots right back to source. A hard chop, although occasionally sort of successful, can result in the whole plant turning up its toes.  Otherwise, after flowering, a tidy up is usually all that is needed.
